However, another key priority must be safety—for both horse and rider. This is an area that warrants critical scrutiny at many stables. All too often, the people in the saddle during these tourist rides have virtually no knowledge of horses.
Carriage Driving: A Fascinating Experience on Wheels
Not every horse lover wants to sit in the saddle—and some, perhaps due to physical limitations, shouldn't. Carriage driving has a dedicated following of its own. Whether driving a single elegant pony or a four-in-hand team of heavy draft horses, handling a rig requires intense concentration, precise rein control, and excellent voice commands. The possibilities range from leisurely Sunday carriage outings to high-speed obstacle driving competitions.
From a safety perspective, driving a carriage is arguably even more challenging than riding. A serious carriage accident typically results not only in extensive property damage but often in severe injuries. Anyone who has witnessed a carriage accident would likely agree: It is even more terrifying than a riding accident.
In terms of the actual sensation, carriage driving is unlike any other mode of transport. Even though you are simply sitting in a vehicle—especially as a passenger—the horses' movement creates a driving experience completely different from that of a car; it is something well worth trying out. And, by the way, there are simulators for carriage driving, just as there are for horse riding.
Proper Riding Gear: Safety and Comfort for Both Parties
To practice the sport safely and in a horse-friendly manner, the right equipment (known as "tack") is essential. A clear distinction is made here between gear for the rider and gear for the horse.
One key principle is undeniable: ill-fitting equipment can lead to chronic pain and behavioral problems in horses. Regular checks by experts are mandatory.
Riding Equipment

Equipment for Riders

Even though the idea of swinging into the saddle and galloping along the beach with the wind in your hair sounds tempting, a riding helmet is indispensable. Furthermore, truly skilled riders have experienced incidents - even with the most reliable horses - that teach exactly why this gear is so important.
- Riding helmet: By far the most important piece of riding gear. It must fit well and meet current safety standards. Incidentally, your hairstyle should never be an "excuse" for not wearing one.
- Riding boots or short boots with chaps: Thanks to their heels, they prevent the foot from slipping through the stirrup in the event of a fall.
- Breeches: These fit snugly, prevent painful chafing, and offer better grip in the saddle thanks to leather or silicone seat patches.
- Safety vest: This protects the spine and internal organs, particularly when riding cross-country or show jumping. You can even get them with built-in airbags these days—but more on that on the equipment page.
Equipment for the horse
When looking at horse equipment, there are various options—some essential, others simply "nice to have"—but the fit is crucial for all of them. The primary criterion is always: Does this fit my horse? And by that, we don't mean the color, but the size and shape of the gear.
- The saddle: It must be individually fitted to the horse's back by a saddler to prevent pressure points and pain.
- The bridle (headgear): It consists of leather straps and the bit (mouthpiece), through which the rider conveys subtle signals. Bitless bridles are also available as an alternative.
- Boots or bandages: These protect the horse's sensitive legs from impacts and injuries.
